Meeting 4

My first meeting. I had met many of these people and I thought I understood what a road district was. I thought I understood for a couple years.

This was an annual election. Elections are to be held the first Tuesday in May unless the district has created other rules for that, which this one had not. They simply didn’t follow that rule.

District meetings are also to be held within the district. This one is being held at the Barkers home on Ghost Canyon, which is not in the district.

Meh… just another law. How important are they, really?

I was being prepped to take an office for a couple months before this. I was told that it is easy. Nothing to it. Don’t worry about it… yada yada yada.

I know better now.

In fact, I started to know better after about a year. Or I should say, I suspected better.

At the beginning of this meeting, both Barkers were still on the board.

But wait! There’s more!

Treasurer’s Report
: Report given by Rose Barker. Responsibilities of Treasurer were taken over by Barker’s after Kent Johnson moved to North Carolina last year.

So, the Barkers, one landowner, are holding all three positions on this board. I already hashed a lot of this out in the previous post concerning the announcement.

Petition and annexation:
Rose Barker reported that there are two plots of land that should be included in the Saddleback Road district. (Petition #2 was circulated and resolution 2017-7 completed) Custer county & DOT is still not recognizing our name change and all annexted properties. Filing of this paperwork at the Register of Deeds will hopefully take care of this issue.

A reminder here that the properties to be annexed need to agree. This is not something that has ever even slowed down this board. What they want, they simply take. That has only gotten stronger with the years passing.

Again on the plus side, back then there was more effort to communicate. Not much effort to be law-abiding, but still… considering the board we have now doesn’t communicate (honestly) OR follow laws, I have to share it was a bit better in the beginning.

So, they took nominations from the floor, and I was nominated. I nodded my acquiescence. And voila, I was elected. Someone with absolutely no knowledge of road districts, nor any real understanding there are laws that we have to follow, and that this is not a ‘club’, but a taxing entity with a a great deal of responsibility.
